Knowing how to test emergency lights is a valuable capability for any UK business.

In this post, we’ll discuss why emergency light testing is so important, how to test emergency lighting and how often tests are needed in the UK.

Why emergency lights need testing

If you own or manage a non-domestic building, you’re responsible for keeping it safe at all times. That includes emergencies when mains power fails or is automatically shut off because of a fire or leak.

In these instances, emergency lighting should be on hand to guide staff and visitors out of the building, illuminating walkways and emergency exits. The vast majority of premises will have these lights installed. But how do you know that they’re working?

Without regular testing, you might only find out that your emergency lights aren’t working when they’re actually called upon. The result is potentially fatal, with people unable to find their way out of a dangerous building.

How to test emergency lighting

UK businesses need to ensure their emergency lighting is installed and maintained in line with BS 5266 standards. To test lights are working, the power supply should be switched off to activate your emergency lights. A visual check can then be performed to make sure everything is working and identify any issues.

A full assessment of your emergency lights should also include a three-hour duration test. Three hours is the amount of time lights should be activated in an emergency. This provides ample time for people to get out of the building as well as illuminating walkways for any emergency service workers who need to enter the building.

How often to test emergency lights

Emergency lights should be tested with a full three-hour duration test at least once a year to make sure they’re ready if and when required in an emergency. For complete assurance, many businesses choose to arrange more frequent monthly tests where lights are activated and checked visually.

Above all else, these tests should only be performed by a professional who is qualified and experienced in checking emergency lights. They will know how to test emergency lighting based on UK standards, so you can have complete peace of mind that your lights are safe, fully functional and compliant.
