helping tadcaster community trust combat rising energy costs

Everyone is feeling the impact of rising energy costs. Nobody more so than Tadcaster Community Sports Trust, who saw their power bill almost treble in a single month in 2022. Having worked with them for over two decades, Volta Compliance was on hand to help…

Rising energy costs for the Community Swimming Pool

When the energy price cap was put up again in October 2022, Tadcaster Community Swimming Pool saw its monthly bill rise from £3,949 (September) to £11,140 (October). That’s an increase of £7,191 for electricity alone.

Thankfully, the Trust, which runs the swimming pool, had a contract for gas that runs until October 2023. While that protects them from a double whammy, it also means that the clock is ticking to make changes before another of their energy bills skyrockets.

If the same increase was reflected for gas, it would see their bill of around £4,000 per month rise to over £10,000. In short, that would make the pool unsustainable unless the Government stepped in with a support package.

What can they do?

Tadcaster Community Trust aren’t alone in their struggle. York’s swimming pools have seen their utility costs double, according to an article in the York Press. GLL, which runs the pools, said they’ve taken several measures to mitigate the rising costs:

  • LED lighting, which provides the same level of light whilst using much less energy than incandescent lighting.
  • Motion sensors on lights to ensure they’re only switched on when needed.
  • Pool covers which retain heat when pools aren’t in use.
  • Reducing pool temperatures by 1 degree.

Unfortunately, these solutions alone aren’t enough. That’s why Swim England is asking the Government to “Save Our Pools” with additional support. According to the campaign, closures or service reductions are likely for 40% of local authorities – with more than 100 pools expected to shut.

How Volta Compliance helped

Volta Compliance has had a working relationship with the Tadcaster Community Trust for over 20 years. In that time, we’ve helped with everything from installations and maintenance to electrical compliance.

When we saw the Trust’s manager, Chris Porter, speaking about rising energy costs on BBC News, we wanted to help. Our team put forward a range of solutions including solar PV. Short for solar photovoltaics, this refers to panels which convert the sun’s energy into usable electricity.

We’re happy to say that Tadcaster Community Trust are already making savings to counteract the massive hike in their monthly energy bills.

Want to reduce your energy output?

At Volta Compliance, we’re passionate about keeping Yorkshire businesses compliant and energy efficient. That ranges from energy audits as part of your ESOS obligations to new installations like LED lighting and solar PV.
